Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium is a great multi-purpose stadium that has been open since the early 1960s, though back when it was built it was known as D.C. Stadium and then renamed after the assassination of Robert Kennedy. The stadium started as the home of the NFL’s Washington Redskins and stayed that way for over 30 years until the “Stadium Boom” of the 1990s the brought the ‘Skins to Maryland for FedEx Field.

Outside of American Football, the stadium has served as a home to two different baseball teams with the Senators back in the 1960s and then a temporary home for the newer Washington Nationals as they awaited their permanent baseball only Nationals Park. The stadium has also hosted many college football games, the 1994 World Cup, 1996 Olympics (pay no attention to the fact they were “in Atlanta”) and the Women’s World Cup in 2003.
Today the stadium is the home of D.C.’s Major League Soccer team, D.C. United, and the NCAA football Eagle Bank Bowl.

Now as far as the stadium itself, we love it… for soccer games… the sightlines from the side are great, there are no seats with badly obstructed views, and best of all, one side gets so rowdy, and it bounces. However, it is not generally used anymore for this but it’s bland for baseball and football as the multi-purpose design has left it with one very silly issue; this biggest being a gigantic wall. The wall would be center field for baseball or an end in football/soccer. It doesn’t ruin anything for fans watching from the side; more that it just means no one has the option to watch games at the ends or corners for a low level. End eats are way the heck in the upper deck….BUT since the stadium generally isn’t used for that anymore, it is not generally an issue anymore… plus on top of that, words is that D.C. United may move soon and when it happen the Redskins will bulldoze R.F.K. and build a new stadium on its site. If that is the case, you may want to make sure to get out there for some kind of event before it is no longer.
